Novice Programs

Novice rowing programs are for those who have rowed before, are familiar with basic rowing terminology, and can safely carry and launch a shell under the command of the coxswain.

If you have no (or very minimal) rowing experience, you should start with our Learn To Row program.

The only way to improve your rowing is to practice, practice, practice. The emphasis in this program is to give you regular practice time to work on your rowing technique and timing with others in the boat. This program is also acceptable for an experienced rower that wants to row recreationally. Although there is a conditioning component in the novice programs, it is less intense than in the experienced group.

**Orientation for all Novices/Beginners

All Beginners should attend the Orientation session the Sunday morning prior to the session they will be rowing. This orientation will be a refresher of the basic rowing stroke and we will also review procedures for our launching site. All orientation sessions are held at the Georges Mills launch site.

Several sessions appropriate for novices are offered throughout the outdoor season. As in other rowing sessions, there is a time commitment required for the duration of the session. If you are unable to make the commitment for all scheduled days of the session, inquire about sharing a seat with another part-time participant. Participants should also plan on taking turns in the coxswains seat.

It is recommended that a new rower spend about one year in a novice program before moving to the experienced programs.

If you are rowing this summer, please read this important information about our launch site at Georges Mills.
